Depression

Depression, also known as major depressive disorder (MDD), is a common and serious mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. It goes beyond feeling "down" or "blue" and can significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of depression can vary widely but often include:
Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.
Changes in appetite or weight.
Insomnia or excessive sleeping.
Fatigue or loss of energy.
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts.

Treatment Options

Treatment typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), is often effective in helping individuals learn coping skills and address underlying issues contributing to their depression. Medications such as antidepressants may also be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization or other intensive treatment may be necessary.
